Episode 61: Social Media Frenzy

In the last week and a half, we have seen a surge of internet philanthropy…but more often than that we have seen a surge of people (albeit raising awareness for something important) soaking themselves in ice water in the name of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. A name few of us have ever heard. In fact, if you spell out the entire thing as opposed to abbreviating it as ALS, most of us still don’t know what it is. Why is that?

Hashtag activism has been on the rise in recent years. On today’s podcast, myself and returning guest, Mike Mulvihill take a look at as to why.

Episode 60: Summer Mix

So I’m one of those people that loved making mix tapes for people. Mix tapes turned to CD’s which has now turned to MP3’s. You dont even have to hand someone a mix anymore, you can just send it to them and they can be halfway across the globe and have it in minutes. That was the old man in me being mesmerized by technology. Anyway, I wanted to make you guys a mix, with just a lil’ bit of commentary. I’ve been having a great summer and I wanted to share that with you. Hope that you dig it.

Episode 59: Har Mar Superstar

I have listened to Har Mar Superstar’s latest record, Bye Bye 17, pretty much nonstop since I bought it back in March of this year. I bought it the day after seeing one of his shows at SXSW.  Since then, any time I talk to anyone about great records of the last year, I make sure to tell them that it is at the top of my list. This interview is easily one of my favorites that we have done and I hope you all enjoy it.

Episode 58: Dave Eggar

Today’s podcast is a conversation with cellist Dave Eggar. Our frequent blog contributor, Jay Sustain, did a phone interview with Mr. Eggar while he was on tour with Phillip Phillips. Dave has played with some of the biggest names in music…ever. This is a great interview. Many thanks to Jay Sustain for doing a terrific job.

Episode 57: Grandmaster Melle Mel

Grandmaster Melle Mel’s career involves a lot of firsts. He was a member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5, the first rap group to be inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. He won the first ever Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for his work with Quincy Jones.  He was part of the Three MC’s, the first emcee group as it relates to rap today and believe me, the list goes on. Aside from being a pioneer in a genre that has redefined modern culture, Mel’s lyrics were some of the first in hip-hop to really address the things that were going on in the real world. He was really the first MC to talk about social consciousness.

Dig it.

Episode 56: Mark Ibold (Pavement, Sonic Youth)

Mark Ibold has been a part of a few things in my life that I hold very dear. First, he was the bass player in Pavement. Easily one of the most unique bands of the last 25 years and one of my favorite bands ever. Secondly, he is a bartender at the Great Jones Cafe in NYC. Its a place that I go regularly and have had countless memorable days and nights in. There is something incredibly magical about the Great Jones and Marc and the rest of the staff play a big part of why that is.

I’ve wanted to get Mark on the podcast for a long time. I’ve seen him around for years but it was until a few months ago that I let him know that I was a huge fan and I really wanted to sit down and talk for this show. He agreed to do it and we had a fantastic conversation. I’m not really sure what I thought talking to him in this context would be like, but it greatly exceeded my expectations. This was a lot of fun and he is a great guy. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did.

Episode 55: Gabe Wilhelm (Raccoon Fighter)

I’ve known Gabe Wilhelm for almost a decade. We played in a band together for a while and have had countless conversations about music and art of all kinds. He, more than almost anyone, changed the way I approach playing music. After not seeing him for years, we reconnected in Savannah a few months ago and I thought he would be a great guest on the podcast. All of the music in today’s episode are songs sung and played by Gabe (we threw in one obscure cover). I decided at the last minute not to put any Gilgongo on this one and focus more on the songs we recorded for the podcast specifically. Hope you dig it.
