Episode 57: Grandmaster Melle Mel

Grandmaster Melle Mel’s career involves a lot of firsts. He was a member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5, the first rap group to be inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. He won the first ever Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for his work with Quincy Jones.¬† He was part of the Three MC’s, the first emcee group as it relates to rap today and believe me, the list goes on. Aside from being a pioneer in a genre that has redefined modern culture, Mel’s lyrics were some of the first in hip-hop to really address the things that were going on in the real world. He was really the first MC to talk about social consciousness.

Dig it.

“Ice Cube’s a Pimp”

My friend and frequent WBUT contributor, Michael Marsicano, illustrated the Ice Cube poster in this CNN piece. They are trying to raise $25,000 to get the GoodYear blimp to read “Ice Cube’s a Pimp” 20 years after the release of his single “It Was a Good Day”. Mike is a bad ass and gets mentioned in the article. Check this out and donate if you can. Its for a hilarious cause.
